Sandy Rubio is the recipient of the Spring 2022 Outstanding Graduating Student Award. Sandy is graduating with a BA in Public Health and is planning to pursue a PhD in Public Health with a focus on population genetics and its intersection with the environment. In addition to excellent academic records, Sandy has been a leader in her hometown, Firebaugh, California, and at UC Merced. She held multiple leadership positions including being the President of the Associate Student Body at West Will Community College, and Vice-President of Membership for the Premed Central Club at UC Merced. Sandy is also actively engaged in research activities by being a research assistant at the Nicotine and Cannabis Policy center and in the Environmental and Perinatal Epidemiology Group (EPEG).
"My long-term goal is to return to my hometown, Firebaugh, CA, to institute positive changes at the community level. I want to take this opportunity to thank the faculty, staff, and students at UCM for making my time here such a valuable experience" Rubio says.
