Coffee & Cookies Gatherings Build Community Between Public Health Students and Faculty
Fall 2025 Coffee & Cookies Success!

For the first time this Fall semester, Coffee & Cookies sessions took place as a welcoming space for public health students to connect with faculty and one another outside the traditional classroom setting.
Coffee & Cookies Success
Spearheaded by the current chair of the undergraduate program, Professor Susana Ramírez, this initiative is meant to strengthen the department’s commitment to student-centered learning. And, in the words of Professor Ramírez:
“It’s also nice to break bread with people—a little break in the middle of the day for a warm drink and a little bit of sugar is just plain good for the soul.”
This informal space was designed to foster students' sense of belonging, especially among those with historical limited access to dedicated academic guidance and opportunities to interact with faculty and mentors.
Through a partnership with SSHA Advising, students attending Coffee & Cookies have the chance to meet with student peer advisors for personalized guidance to gain clarity about their academic pathway. Feedback from attendees is already informing the development of new advising materials, journey maps, and improvements in how curricular expectations are communicated.
This initiative exemplifies how a relatively inexpensive and simple intervention can nurture a sense of community to advance student success. It has also highlighted larger projects the Department may undertake to enhance academic excellence.
Coffee & Cookies will continue during the Spring semester. Drop by for conversation and treats on January 28, March 11, or April 8, any time between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
