Kimberly Arellano Carmona, a first-year doctoral student in Public Health, has been awarded the 2018-19 Faculty Mentor Program Fellowship at UC Merced for her continued work with Dr. Susana Ramirez, assistant professor of Public Health at UC Merced. The Faculty Mentor Program is intended to support the acquisition and development of advanced research skills under faculty mentorship, and to increase the number of students who complete their Ph.D. degree and successfully acquire a faculty appointment.

During the fellowship period, Arellano Carmona will continue research examining how the information environment contributes to confusion about healthy diets, and also start new research examining the behaviors of those who seek cancer and health-related information for others who may have access barriers, to improve the transmission of information. Her research interests reflect the shifting demographics of the United States and focus on Latino health, and she is particularly interested in how access to health care and health information contribute to Latino cancer health disparities. Arellano Carmona earned a Master of Public Health from CSU Northridge and is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
