Dalia Magaña is an Associate Professor of Spanish Linguistics at the University of California, Merced. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis in Spanish Linguistics. Her research focuses on Spanish language communication in medical, educational, and social contexts. Her work on communication in healthcare aims to raise awareness about the role of language use and cultural competency in improving patient-centered healthcare with Spanish speakers. She has published on transcultural competency in doctor–patient interactions with a focus on interpersonal communication. She has also worked on how Spanish speakers conceptualize cancer in health narratives through their use of culturally-embedded metaphors. She is also interested in engaging Spanish language and applied linguistics pedagogy with language use in healthcare.
