Professor Yen is senior author for a report which examined the association between gentrification during the period 2006-2015 and binge drinking in an analysis of the California Health Interview Survey data. For those newer to the neighborhood, gentrification is associated with binge drinking.

Gentrifying neighborhoods are characterized by widespread change in a short period of time. The perceived threat of displacement for residents living in gentrifying areas can be considerable, particularly for those groups—such as minorities and low-income residents—historically subjected to displacement. The loss of even a single resident or family may have sizeable impacts on a neighborhood’s social network.

Gentrifying neighborhoods are in many ways two neighborhoods (the old and the new) geographically superimposed upon one-another, a phenomenon that could explain why any effect of an increased prevalence of drinking establishments on binge drinking might have largely limited to the neighborhood’s relative newcomers.
